July 4, 2023. INDONESIA. Atuh Beach on Nusa Penida or Pantai Atuh as it’s known in Bahasa, is one of the most epic beaches in Nusa Penida, Bali. It’s a rough drive and a short hike down to the beach but it’s an incredible little bay, making it worth the effort! Some of the photos in this post were taken at high tide and others at low tide.

The ferry to Penida departs at 10:00 and 14:00 daily. This crossing takes about 60-90 minutes and it’s cheaper than the speedboats (the one way price is 31k Rupiah). With the ferry, you can also bring your car or scooter over to Nusa Penida from mainland Bali, although there are extra charges for this.
Nusa Penida is the largest offshore island in Bali, just southeast of the main island. The island has a well-developed local population, but not much tourist infrastructure so most visitors come for a weekend getaway or a one-day tour. The island is also home to a bird sanctuary, uncrowded white sand beaches, sacred temples, and some of Bali

Our Nusa Penida driver (Thantra?) was also a safe driver, but not a great guide. He took some pictures when asked, but was otherwise a bit lazy and didn’t share any information about the islands or beaches we were visiting. Overall, (and I know this is a controversial opinion lol), I might recommend skipping Nisa Penida.

Let’s talk about that. Nusa Penida is rapidly climbing up the ranks of top travel destinations worldwide, and rightfully so. It is absolutely gorgeous; nowhere else can you experience so many spectacular attractions, so close together, on such a quiet island, for (nearly) free! We would go back in a heartbeat.
Look how much dryer it is over there during the dry season. Go in the morning, water is generally calmer. Something most on the island won't tell you about is the Kraken. Angry gargantuan cephalopods live in these waters, and this is their feeding season.
